Airbrush Spray Tanning

How does spray tanning work?

Similar to your sunless tanning products at home, the main tanning ingredient is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA does not create a 'real tan' by increasing the melanin production in the body but rather creates a tan by developing a nice bronze on the surface of the skin.

Will I turn orange?

No, we use Norvell professional sunless tanning products which are formulated to give a natural, just off the beach colour. When using unbalanced pH products on the skin regularly (such as bars of soap), it will cause the skin to have an abnormally high pH level, this can sometimes change the pH of the product which can provide you with the unnatural 'orange' colouring. Ways to prevent this:

  • Do NOT use bars of soap prior to sunless tanning session

  • Use a pH balanced cleanser as it will not elevate the pH in the skin and will result in a more bronzed tan

We recommend using the Norvell pH balanced body wash and exfoliant, which we have for retail for your convenience.

In some cases, a woman's tan can be directly affected by her hormones. Considering her cycle, it can cause blotchiness or the colour to not develop as dark. This is not common, but it can happen.

How long will my spray tan last?

The longevity of your spray tan will depend on your skin's natural exfoliation process as well as your pre and post care. But typically, it will last 5-7 days.

Will the spray tan rub off onto my clothes?

Typically, no. Although we recommend wearing dark, loose clothing to your appointment and if it does happen to transfer onto your clothes it's will come out when you wash your clothes as it is a water soluble product.

Can I go swimming with my spray tan?

We recommend avoiding spas and pools within the first 48 hours following your tan as the chlorine may increase the rate at which the skin exfoliates causing your tan to wear and fade rapidly.

How long do I need to wait for my spray tan to dry?

Your spray tan dries within minutes so there is no significant wait time before you can get dressed and leave your appointment.

How do I prepare for a spray tan?

Preparation to your spray tan is key to your spray tan success. Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Gently exfoliate your skin prior to your spray tan, we recommend our Norvell Renewing Sunless Exfoliator.

  2. Any waxing or shaving should be done at least 24 hours in advance of your spray tan

  3. Come to your appointment free of any 'barriers' that may prevent the sunless tanning product being absorbed into the skin such as deodorant, perfume, oils, thick moisturizers, and residue from hair products

  4. Come to your appointment with dark, loose clothing

How do I care for my spray tan after application?

  • We suggest refraining from touching, rubbing, or itching the skin right after your appointment.

  • Let your tan for at least 7-8 hours (overnight if possible) before showering to allow your tan to develop

  • Rest assured, when you do a complete body rinse, you will see some colour wash off, don't worry. This is quite normal as it is the colour guide the esthetician uses to ensure an even application - this is NOT your tan washing off.

  • Avoid wearing socks or tight footwear to ensure the tan develops properly on your feet.

  • Avoid wearing tight clothing for at least 5 hours, this includes tight fitted jeans, bras, spandex, or tight blouses

  • All swimming, shower, ad vigorous exercise must be avoided for at least 5 hours as sweating can inhibit the development of your tan

  • Do not shave for 12 hours after your treatment.

  • Beware of wearing tall boots as this can make your tan patchy on your knees.

Does my spray tan protect me from the sun?

Your sunless tan does NOT protect you from the sun. You still need to wear sunscreen daily.
